Living off the grid is possible.  An off-grid or remote system requires battery system to store the power produced.  Depending on the size of the system you will need, it can be expensive.  The biggest expense when building an off-grid system goes into batteries.  If solar is the only source of power, the system must be properly engineered and designed for it to be able to produce all the energy needed of home/business including winter months and/or consecutive cloudy days.  However, if your application if all year long usage, may want to consider having a backup generator onsite.
